Emily Raphael has a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in English and an MA in English from NYU. She completed the requirements for a doctorate in English from the University of Virginia and is permanently ABD. She has taught literature and composition classes at the University of Virginia and Queens College. She and her husband Steve have two children (yes, she attempted to tutor both of them for the SAT. Only one was amenable; the other was outsourced). In her copious free time, Emily enjoys word games; reading in most genres and topics except horror and self-help, with a particular fondness for Victorian novels, politics, and history; doomscrolling Twitter; and obeying the wishes of her dog, Malcolm. While she doesn’t make value judgments about other people’s usage, she does have strong feelings about the Oxford comma.
